Soul Expeditions

The Soul Expedition is a 3-day contemplative backpacking journey into the Colorado wilderness.

At Project Renew, we seek to move toward what is broken so that we can become everyday peacemakers that participate in God’s ongoing work of renewal in our world. Soul Expeditions are a venue for peacemaking within by providing an experience where the journey of the soul and the physical journey mirror one another.

Rather than being destination-focused, Soul Expeditions emphasize the idea of wandering—experiencing an expansive place without strict boundaries and borders. Allowing ourselves to wander the sacred and rugged wilderness, outside of our typical routines and possessions, helps us encounter our souls—and God—in profound ways. Soul Expeditions are meant to meet you right where you’re at. Whether you are looking for wisdom, healing, direction, or inspiration, you are free to explore in the context of a safe, guided journey surrounded by natural beauty.

Three Options for Summer 2025

For the first time, we’re offering three different difficulty levels. Higher difficulty involves longer distances and greater elevation gain each day. Lower difficulty options allow participants greater flexibility in choosing how much hiking/exploring they want to do.

A $300 donation covers all of a participant’s costs, but we want to keep this experience accessible for everyone. Participants from Denver Community Church are able to sign up and, on the registration form, contribute what they can.

June 27-29: MEDIUM DIFFICULTY

This is the standard Soul Expedition offering. While 7-9 miles total traveled and ~2,500 ft elevation gain over 3 days might not seem like a lot, the terrain we travel is very rugged, and in many places, there are no trails. We navigate uneven ground and steep hillsides. Participants need to carry their gear, food, and water with them in packs for the entirety of the journey.

July 18-20: EASIEST DIFFICULTY

This option is for people want to experience the elements of the Soul Expedition, but may not be up for carrying all of their gear with them. A wide, grassy valley will serve as our “home base” from which participants will be able to journey out (or not) during the day, returning to camp in the evening.

Aug 22-24: HARDEST DIFFICULTY

This offering is only for participants looking for a challenge. We will cover greater distances (up to 18 miles) and gain more elevation (up to 5,000 ft) than a standard Soul Expedition. It is recommended that you have participated in a Soul Expedition before or that you are well-versed in endurance hiking/backpacking excursions.
